Tomorrow I have to give a 30 minute presentation about myself. I've been talking about this a lot because I've been dreading it a lot more. Overall it seems really nice to be able to sum up my college experience and present my learnings to people. People who then will judge my presentation and tell me if I meet their expectations.
What I'm dreading is the fact that there is supposed to be some over-arching theme going on, showing how I've really developed as a person. Yes, I've grown as a person, no there is no theme to it. So unlike everyone and their mother who gives this presentation I can't demonstrate how my past experiences are shaping my future. I don't have some awesome internship lined up for the summer. I'm not single handedly saving the world with some organization that I started. I've actually become less focused and I don't know even more what I want to do with my life.
This silly presentation has single-handedly made me feel bad about myself and my lack of direction.
In Carlson speak, I think that means my future is "flexible."

Let me tell you as the poster child for indecision, It's ok. As a college student with more than a semester plus one summer left you have time to think of something that you would like to do. AND imagine, right now you have more direction than you had even one year ago at this time, then you were only kind of sure you were going to study in Ireland and were tossing the idea of HR around. When graduation is knocking on your face is when you can start to worry about what exactly you want to do. Besides if you set your heart on something and decide you hate it...you're stuck, like I was with Computer science, that is what I wanted to do and I didn't even look anywhere else. So in carlson-speak, yes, you are 'flexible' but in student-speak, you're right on track. I think you'll do a superb job. Besides, you rock that should count for something right?
BLAG IT!!!
After 4 months in Ireland have I not taught you plenty about how to blag your way through college? Heck it's how I got through my entire first year!
Firstly - Your experience in Ireland was an essential part of life direction as now you have a deeper understanding of other cultures and you intend to use this knowledge to help you manage people in different parts of the world, helping the company you work for to become a global sucess.
Secondly - Your experience with SANE and those other non-profit things gives you an all round experience. Helping ot teach you how to motivate people to work without financial reward.
Then after that you can throw in some stuf about your studies, majors and minors, any previous job experience you had boost it up a little. For example when I was a barman in Ballyshannon I was pretty much left to my own devices... so now I claim I was bar manager! In the radio station I used work for I looked after two transmission sites, turning things back on when there was a power cut. So now I say I used be a "trainee broadcast engineer".
People are too busy thinking about themselves to bother looking deeper into your past, unless you claimed to have won 14 gold medals in the Athen's Olympics you'll fly by.
You'll do mighty.
Another idea would be to stand up and say:
"I plan to be a housewife when I leave college. The only reason I came to Carlson was to find a young, rich, oil tycoon who'll keep me a kept woman for the rest of my days.. thank you"
Look at their reaction and run away.
By the time you get this you will have probably finished your presentation. Regardless of how that goes you should feel wonderful that your brother said and feels such wonderful things about you. Any you have a friend who also cares very much for you. I would say that just with these two comments on your blog, you are far richer than most people. Plus, I think you are terrific and will be a smashing success in what ever you do! It will all come to you!
